Mrs Charlotte Shang-Simpson was born on 23rd January 1936 at Keta in the Volta Region of Ghana. She received her primary and middle school education from 1942-1951, after which she attended the famous Wesley College, Kumasi from 1953 to 1956 where she attained the Teacher’s Certificate “A”.

After qualifying as a teacher, she taught in the following institutions: –
1. St. Monica’s Convent, Ashanti Mampong – 1959
2. St. Monica’s School, Cape Coast – 1960
3. Morning Star School – 1972

After gaining a considerable amount of experience in these institutions, she dreamt of establishing a school of her own and on the 1st of May 1972, she made her dream a reality by opening the doors of First Circular Nursery School, based at Cantonments, Accra, to three pupils. These were Dr Angela El-Adas (nee Sawyer), Dr Chris Akwasi Adomako and Mr Charles Amonoo Mends Moore.

As the years went by, First Circular Nursery grew from strength to strength, its reputation spreading with no advertising but by word of mouth. In 1988, the school relocated to Achimota Forest residential Area and the name was changed to Golden Age School, a name chosen by Mrs Shang-Simpson to reflect the fact that gold is always enduring and never rusts or loses its lustre – a metaphor for the type of school she hoped that Golden Age would grow to become.

Like the biblical mustard seed, Golden Age soon grew into a very strong and sprawling tree, resulting in the need for an expansion project from 1990 to 1996, six additional classrooms were built to house primary classes one to six. Due to continued requests from parents of the excellent institution that Golden Age was blossoming into, a further block was built and the school expanded to include a Junior Secondary School section (JSS). It is very gratifying to report that the first batch of students who were presented for BECE in 1999 all passed with distinction. The excellent BECE results of the students from Golden Age continue to inspire the future generations to this day.

Mrs Shang-Simpson’s love for her students knows no bounds. She knows each precious child by name and is always ready to lend a helping hand, to provide timely words of wisdom or a pat on the back and if need be, a shoulder to cry on. This is also true in respect of her relationship with the members of her staff. Mama Charlotte, as she is aectionately known truly rejoices with them and mourns with them in equal measure. She is not only the founder and CEO of the school, but also a Mother, Counsellor and friend to everyone with whom she comes into contact with and this has contributed in no small measure to the well-deserved reputation of the school.

Mrs Shang-Simpson is a dedicated Christian and is a very active member of the Legon Anglican Church and the Mothers’ Union of the church. Her strong faith is reflected in the motto of the school – Our God Reigns.
